Bloody Sunday

Today is the start of my duty as a volunteer in a non-profit, non-government humanitarian agency. I am stationed in the blood bank. My job is to interview and determine the blood types of our clients. New volunteers like me are not allowed to extract blood for donation. But the medical technologist promised that later on, after we have gained more experience, she would let us insert the needles.

Most of our clients are male and I really enjoyed the interview part. They are especially shocked when I finally reached the bottom of the interview sheet and asked (the questionnaire is in English so I have to translate each question in Tagalog.) the following questions;

Kailan ho kayo huling nakipagtalik sa kapwa lalaki? sa bayarang babae? sa isang gumagamit ng ipinagbabawal na gamot? sa isang may AIDS? (When was the last time you had an intercourse with the same sex? with a prostitute? with a drug-user? with someone with AIDS?)

They are really shocked. Most said no but the last one I interviewed, a 20 years old, answered VERY SHYLY; “wala pa… wala pa… wala pa akong experience.” (I still have no experience.) The answer made me stop for a moment, I was really amused.

My father didn’t know that I volunteered. He said that it is just a waste of money since my transportation alone costs roughly two hundred pesos already  while I wouldn’t get anything in return anyway, even a food allowance, so I have to give all these different alibis just so he can leave our house. Hay.

My co-volunteers are fun to be with, too.

    talaga ha, isama mo ako para makapagtanong din ako niyan. si hubby nga tawa ko ng tawa nung ininterview eh.

  4. hey, that’s great that you’re giving some of your time for a very worthy cause ;-) loved that last question; i guess it would be shocking for men to hear that. hahaha! in tokyo, blood donation centers often have a food/drink/ice cream bar for those who donated blood. some centers even give out lunch stubs so a lot of homeless people practically live on them.

  5. btw, thanks for dropping by my blog! to answer your question about Tampipi:

    “Naming the group Tampipi took several weeks of debate, but in the end we decided on a name that would symbolize the modern Filipino: the ‘Pinoy of the world’. This person is someone who is constantly on the move, traveling around the world, working for a living, learning, growing and giving back to the Philippines. The name Tampipi (being the almost-forgotten Tagalog word for bag) also cautions us to look back to our roots and never forget where we came from. We as a people, as Pinoys who live and work abroad, are the Tampipi or receptacle of all things Filipino; it is we who carry our culture and traditions with us and within us as we go on our travels, and in turn it is also we who give back to the country whatever glory we may find.”

  7. good thing there was no question for bestial things, yikes!

  8. lol.. the answer amused you – i’d laugh my ass off :)

    Sobra naman yung tanong eh.. “kailan kayo nakipagtalik” as opposed to the more p0litically correct ” nakipagtalik ba kayo” :)

    If I was there I’d add another question to the older, matrona looking ladies – ” nakipagtalik ba kayo sa bayarang lalake” and just see their reaction :)
